The Supplements, Products, and Regimens We Trust
Hi friends! Welcome to our brand new Simply Rooted blog! As I went back and forth from topic to topic as to WHAT our first blog post should cover, I finally landed on one that I believe will answer many of your questions. Kacy and I both are asked quite frequently what supplements and products we use…And TODAY we will be sharing that info with you! =)
First of all, we want you to know that we work very closely with the amazing Naturopathic Physician, Dr. Tanda Cook, of Bozeman, MT, AND we also do a lot of research ourselves, gathering information from other respected ND’s and MD’s in the field. Although we feel that we have a good regimen going here, not all of these products will work for everyone and we certainly are NOT making any medical claims to heal or treat any medical conditions. ;)
This first post might be pretty long, but I wanted to explain a bit about each supplement/product and it’s benefits. We try our best to consume a balanced and diverse diet with lots of pasture raised/grass-finished meats, wild caught fish, and plenty of organic/local vegetables in order to get the vitamins, nutrients, and minerals that we need daily, but sometimes our diets need a little extra help from supplements. Here are our choices…
About 3 years ago Dr. Cook taught us to take a swig of this stuff before meals. ACV is wonderful for MANY things, but it is really good for reducing gut inflammation and getting those gut juices working properly so that we can digest our food better. We WANT an acidic stomach ya’ll! Start with 1 tsp (or less) before your first meal of the day and work your way up to 1 tablespoon or more. ;)
We take two of these bad boys every day. Probiotics promote good bacteria in the gut, which we need more and more of. The gut/brain connection is so crucial…healthy gut, healthy brain!
If you are a living, breathing human on this earth, a magnesium supplement might be a good option for you. PLENTY of humans are super deficient in this calming mineral. Stress and a poor diet depletes magnesium. Our bodies need magnesium to rest and relax (combats anxiety/anxiousness), digest food, sleep well, produce progesterone and GABA, and the list goes on. We take two capsules in the evening.
Organ meats are SOOOO good for us – extreme superfoods if you will! It is best to make sure you are taking a supplement or eating organ meat from a completely pasture raised animal. Nutrients are much higher and cleaner this way compared to meat from animals who have been raised in stressful confinement lots (jacking up their cortisol – which then humans consume) and fed unfathomable things to fatten them up faster. WHAT THE ANIMALS EAT, WE EAT! Liver is LOADED with B vitamins, biotin, and folate. It is a fantastic source of Vitamin A. Liver is a WONDERFUL source of goodness for fertility/pregnancy, and my FAVORITE… it helps immensely with detoxification and liver function.
We take these guys AS NEEDED. We will pop two capsules and take them down if we are traveling, maybe we ate at a restaurant that didn’t have the healthiest choices, or we may take these the entire time on a vacation if we are getting a little crazy with a lot of our meals. It’s good to have when you think your digestive system might need a little help to break down food and nutrients better. Some people take this every day to help with digestion, which is totally cool!
This is some GOOD, QUALITY stuff! It is wild and raw WITHOUT any heat or chemicals used– sustainably harvested from Norway. I recently started taking this after doing much research on the cleanest, most pure fish oil out there. Dr. Chris Kresser highly recommends Rosita. Kacy and I take 1 tsp each day. SOME of the health benefits of fish oil = HIGH in omega-3 fatty acids, which fight and reduce inflammation like a beast, also boosts brain health and fights anxiety and depression (fish oil has really helped me personally in this area), fish oil has been shown to fight against cognitive decline and brain atrophy – like Alzheimer’s, it is wonderful for fertility and pregnancy, and it just may decrease body fat, too. ;)
We take this supplement during the luteal phase of our menstrual cycle. Primrose oil is an essential omega-6 fatty acid found in a wildflower that grows right here in North America. This supplement helps to balance out hormones, reduces PMS symptoms, increasing fertility, and it is also good for treating acne problems (this has really helped Kacy with her cystic acne that she used to battle BADLY). We take 2 capsules each day from ovulation until the first day of our menstrual cycle. If your menstrual cycle is out of whack, you can follow the moon cycle by taking this from the full moon to the new moon each month.
RAW SPROUTED SUNFLOWER SEEDS (not pictured – but we get them from the same company as the pumpkin seeds):
Excellent for balancing out estrogen and progesterone in the body. High in nutrients that promote liver function and proper hormone extraction through the liver. Also, high in omega-6’s that convert to GLA. We take these during our luteal phase with primrose oil. Eat 2 tablespoons or more per day.
RAW SPROUTED PUMPKIN SEEDS:
These tasty seeds are great for hormonal balance as well. AND they are also good at killing off parasites in the body (which yes, we all have them). We eat about ½ cup or more each day of our follicular phase: menstruation to ovulation OR new moon to full moon.
FLAX SEEDS + CHIA SEEDS:
Again, high in omega-3’s and great sources of fiber to move excess hormones (especially estrogen) through the liver and out of the body…which then promotes hormonal balance.
Turmeric (curcumin) is excellent for fighting off and reducing inflammation. Also, it is fantastic for detoxification. OH – AND BRAIN HEALTH! This list of turmeric benefits goes on and on. We try to make a turmeric latte daily: 1 tsp turmeric powder (or 2 tsp turmeric root), 16 oz hot water, 1 scoop vital proteins collagen, ½ tsp fresh minced ginger OR ½ tsp Ceylon cinnamon, 1-2 tablespoons of coconut butter or coconut cream, and you can also add a bit of monk fruit powder or pure stevia for sweetness. BLEND in Vitamix or something similar and ENJOY!
Great for hair, skin, nails, bones/ligaments and our favorite…promotes gut and digestion health – goodbye leaky gut! We add a scoop to our matcha latte in the morning and a scoop in our turmeric latte in the afternoon.
Matcha is LOADED AND PACKED full of antioxidants (such as EGCg) and catechins – which fight off free radicals, it detoxifies the body – protects the liver, calms the mind by promoting L-theanine/gaba production, enhances brain function, boosts the immune system, balances hormones, etc. We said bye to coffee (except for an occasional treat) and said hello to matcha! Every morning we wake up and make a latte with 1 tsp matcha, 16 oz hot (not boiling) water, 1 tablespoon of coconut butter, 1 tablespoon of Bulletproof Brain Octane Oil (not pictured – will talk more about this later), 1 scoop of vital proteins collagen, ¼ - ½ tsp Ceylon cinnamon, and you can add monk fruit or pure stevia for sweetener if desired!
We love to support our liver and kidneys. Detoxification is so important AND dandelion root is amazing at detoxing. Milk thistle tea is also great as well! There are a lot of good detox teas out there, just try your best to purchase organic when possible.
If you need to drink more water, which we all do, these guys add good flavor. They include lots of good vitamins and minerals and they are free of all the nasty stuff like gluten, sugar, and soy. No caffeine either. We drink anywhere from 1-3 per day.
BONE BROTH (not pictured):
We make a tasty bone broth at Simply Rooted that we drink daily. Bone broth is full of nutrients, amino acids, collagen, gelatin, and more. It is great for gut, brain, joint, and skin health. It boosts the immune system and aids in detoxification. We sip on a hot cup of bone broth every day.
And last BUT not least…we rub organic castor oil on our stomach at night for detoxing!
Ok guys, I totally know that was a lot – especially if you are just getting started in your health journey. I didn’t want to leave anything out for the die-hards, but you can certainly start small by simply taking a shot of ACV each day or start seed cycling! Please remember, we are far from perfect – we don’t beat ourselves up or make it mandatory to consume all of this stuff every single day. We try our best, but balance is key and there are ABSOLUTELY days where we miss the boat. Making rules and expecting perfection doesn’t serve us. These are the supplements and products we suggest at this time because we believe they ADD health to our lives.
